Fundamentals of Web Design

Description

This course covers the basic elements of creating a functioning website through tutor instruction and hands on practical exercises. Delegates will learn:

  • How a website works
  • Structuring of directories and files
  • How to create and edit the files with common text editors
  • How to upload and manipulate the files with FTP clients
  • How to code HTML/XHTML documents to a basic knowledge
  • How to format text, include images, tables and other page elements
  • Basics of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

At the end of the two day course, delegates will have been introduced to the main elements of putting together a simple static website.

Cost: £499, 2 Days Tuition, Includes lunch, course materials and equipment usage

    Prerequisites

    Basic PC skills and a working knowledge of using Windows, the ability to open, copy, edit, save text files and use a browser such as Firefox or Internet Explorer.

    X203 Website Structure / Web Server Basics

    Directory structures on a web server; Paths to the public website directory; Paths to script directories; Other server configuration files.

    X105 File Manipulation

    The basics of Editing, Saving, and Naming text based files on your computer. In some cases the principles also apply to the management of other file types and also to files residing remotely.

    X110 File Transfer, FTP Clients

    The basics of File Transfer Protocol (FTP), and use of an FTP Client in order to transfer files from your computer to the remote web server. This course will also explain the two file transfer types, ascii and binary.

    X215 Basic HTML & Structure of a Web Page

    • Document Elements, Overview of Tags, Head Elements, Body Elements, Inline and Block Elements
    • Formatting Text Headings and Paragraphs, Horizontal Rules
    • Hypertext Links and Anchors, Paths
    • Usage of Tables and Lists
    • Embedding Images
    • Basic Use of Colours, Hex and RGB codes
    • Basic Use of Frames
    • Putting It All Together: Creating A Template


    X230 Advanced HTML/XHTML

    • Overview of Simple Form Elements,
    • Overview of Scripting
    • Special Characters and HTML entities


    X235 Standards and Accessibility

    Covers W3C HTML standards and basics of providing accessible pages to meet legal guidelines.

    X240 Document Types & Validation

    Covering different document types such as HTML, XHTML, and XML, how to choose your formats and how to test their validity.

    X303 Introduction to CSS, Basic Styling

    Basic styling of a web page with Cascading Style Sheets, using CSS positioning, font styles, changing the document appearance for other media such as handhelds and printing.

    Submitting to Directories, Fine Tuning Meta Data and Content, Robot.txt Usage

    Hosting, Server Operating Systems, Domains, Nameservers and DNS

    Keeping your website secure, preventing attacks and keeping scripts updated.
